Weekend scout camp
Ohakune scouts and cubs enjoyed a day and a night at the Karioi Domain last weekend. The camp was organised by Jim Field-Mitchell, group leader for the Ohakune cubs and scouts, as a parting gift for the boys, as he is moving to Foxton. Many parents attended the camp and helped with making the weekend a success by showing the scouts their pioneering skills and organising games for the cubs, said scout leader, Kevin Pearson. The five scouts slept outside in tents and did their own cooking while the 16 cubs slept in the Karioi Hall, supervised by cub leaders, Yvonne Triggell and Helen Hammond. The cubs took part in athletic tasks to gain badges for their Koru award work, while scouts participated in an intricate compass course test with Daryl Knight coming first, 2nd Gregg Beisly, 3rd Jonathan Ritchie, 4th a former scout, Peter Fetzer, 5th Mathew Tailby and 6th Karl Pearson. A commando bridge was constructed across a nearby stream with the aid of Wil-
liam Tailby and all the scouts managed to negotiate the tricky course to the other side. The following day, one of the ropes, which must have been feeling the strain, decided to part company strand by strand, to the amusement of the scouts and the embarrassment of the scout leader, Kevin Pearson. A cricket set recently purchased for the group kept everyone occupied while the leaders had a tea break. A presentation was made to Mr Field-Mitchell for his efforts as group leader. Kevin said the weather was better than expected, and the group managed to break camp after lunch on Sunday without having to wring out any of the boys!
