Long service award for fireman
Mr Graham Dixon of Ohakune, was made a life member of the Ohakune Volunteer Fire Brigade at the brigade's annual general meeting last week. The life membership is an honorary title which is given to those who have served in the brigade for over 1 5 years when they retire, or those who servefor over 25 years and are still in the brigade. Mr Dixon has been a member of the brigade for 18 vftars.
He joined the brigade in November 1 956 but resigned in 1957 because of work commitments. He rejoined in May 1967 and retired from the service in March of this year. Mr Dixon's father was also a member of the fire service in Ohakune for nearly 1 6 years but resigned because of ill health. Now. Graham Dixon's son, Dwaine ( 1 7) is a third generation fireman after joining
the brigade earlier this year. "We are hoping he will stay in it for 15 years too," says Mr Dixon. Mr Dixon was presented with a model steam fire appliance of the type first used by the Ohakune brigade when it formed in 1903. The engine was drawn by horses. Also at the AGM Mr Jonathon Gregg was presented with a two year bar for 1 1 years' service to the brigade.
