Staying two-way

The Ohakune Borough Council has decided against making Goldfinch Street one- way. At a meeting of the town planning committee last month it was agreed to make the street one-way between Clyde and Ayr Street on a trial basis. But when the matter came before the full council for approval, chairman of the planning committee, Cr. Errol Sue, said the committee had made its decision thinking it was in the best interest of the public, "but it has since come to our notice that many people are against it." A public meeting was then held to discuss the matter, at which residents passed a motion expressing the opinion that a pedestrian crossing in Goldfinch Street would be of more value in improving road safety than would making the street one-way. At last week's full council meeting members voted to retain the status quo and leave the question open for discussion in the future.
