Brian Elwood to visit region

Mr Brian Elwood, chairman of the Local Government Commission which is charged with restructuring local government throughout the country, will be in the Ruapehu region on 8th and 9th July. At Wednesday's meeting of Raetihi Borough Council, Mayor Garrick Workman, said he thought the visit would be purely to gauge the feelings of the three local

authorities in the region. However, Cr. Andrew Cornwall said "a tide was running for amalgamation" and if the councillors were to meet Mr Elwood they should "at least have a barebones proposal to put to him." The subject of possible amalgamation was also discussed at a recent meeting of Ohakune Borough Council, and a meeting between the two boroughs and Waimarino County Council to dis-

cuss the issue has been provisionally planned for later this month. It is likely the whole structure of local government in the Ruapehu region will be radically changed by the Commission, which is looking at every local authority in the country. Mayor of Ohakune, Bill Taylor stated when the task of the Commission was first announced, "It is imperative we work out what we want and how we will go about it. "
