Escape from death

A tree saved the life of a Raetihi man who plunged 130 metres from the top of the Makatote railway viaduct, north of Raetihi on Saturday. The 35-year-old man had been walking across the viaduct with a group of companions at about 4pm when he fell. However, the man's fall was broken by a 10-metre high tree growing beside the Makatote Stream. When Ohakune police constable Greg Whyte reached the scene the man had climbed about one kilometre out of the gorge to reach the road. He was taken to Wanganui Base Hospital where he was in a "satisfactory" condition in the intensive care unit on Monday. The escape from death was described as "absolutely miraculous" by constable Whyte. The name of the man has not been released by police.
