Waiouru Rangers beat Melville
Last Saturday saw Waiouru Rangers take on Melville in their third game of the season. After losing their previous game, Rangers were not about to travel all the way to Hamilton to suffer another defeat. But Melville had other ideas, and were still looking for their first win of the season. Melville gave Rangers a few problems in the first 10 minutes which paid off when Wags Waghorn gave away an early penalty, which Melville had no trouble taking. Play then see-sawed back and forward but saw few scoring chances, until Kel Hawley was brought down in the penalty area. Once again Wags Waghorn was asked to 'do his thing' for Rangers and shot
home his second penalty for the season. This brought the game back to one each at half-time. The second half started much the same way as the first half finished, with the game being played end to end, but a 10 minute period of pressure on the Melville defence saw several corners being awarded — the last of these being curled in nicely over the out-stretched arms of the Melville keeper and finding the top corner of the Melville goal. Rangers were now ahead 2-1, with Wags Waghorn getting his second goal of the match. The game continued to flow with Rangers failing to increase their lead by missing several good scoring opportunities. With 10 minutes to go Melville threw everything
they could at the Rangers goal, hitting the post twice and having shots cleared off the line. Really -exciting stuff, but luck was on Rangers side and they held on to win 2-1 and gained 3 more valuable points. Player of the day for Rangers — Kel Hawley.
