Bach fire in Raetihi

A spectacular blaze occurred in Raetihi on Wednesday when a two-bedroomed bach in Ward Street caught alight. There was a good turn out from the volunteer fire brigade, but the inside of the bach, the roof and most of the exterior was ruined. The owner of the buildings Mr Mark Cribb has his house in front of the bach. "If the wind had been blowing th© other way, the house would have been burnt as well," he said. Luckily no one was injured as the bach was empty at the time. The cause of the fire is unknown. Several rubber tyres that were inside the building caught alight and caused a large amount of smoke and flames. The Raetihi brigade, like Ohakune, is currently looking for new volunteers as several of their members are leaving the area. Anyone who would like to do a service for the community, should contact the fire brigade headquarters in Duncan Street.
