Brigade at hay fire

Two fire appliances and a water tanker from the Ohakune fire brigade were dispatched to Mr Owen Hammond's farm on Raetihi Road on Thursday evening after hay in one of the farm's paddocks caught fire. The hay had been cut and was soon to be bailed. Mr Hammond and a number of helpers had attempted to put out the blaze, but were unable to do so and were forced to call in the fire brigade. About 100 square metres of the paddock was burned and all the cut hay in that area destroyed. The brigade was at the scene for about half an hour. The Ohakune fire brigade is a volunteer service and is currently understaffed. Any young men — or young ladies — who would like to do something for the community and would be able to respond when the siren sounds should contact the fire station in Goldfinch Street.
