COACH NOMINATED BY CLUB AS COACH/CONVENOR
Ohakune coach, Ken George, looks set to become one of three Wanganui selectors for next season after the Wanganui Rugby Union decided recently to drop the sole selector coach concept in favour of a panel. Mr George, who has always maintained that the panel system is a fairer and more logical way to select a representative team, was nominated by his club which won the Wanganui Senior Championship this year. At a meeting between the 33 delegates on 19 November, the panel will be chosen from others nominated by the clubs that comprise the Wanganui Union. At their next meeting the management committee will decide which one of the three will be coach/ convenor. It is. this job that Mr George is hopeful will be his for the coming season. Wanganui will be touring the South Island next year but they will not have a
Ranfurly Shield challenge against Canterbury, much to Mr George's disappointment. Should the local bookshop owner be selected coach/ convenor, he would like to see more emphasis put on fitness as he feels that the side this year, whilst containing a great deal of talent, was lacking in that valuable commodity. He would also make minor positional changes, probably in the backline. If he is appointed Wanganui coach, Ken George will have to step down from his current Ohakune position, something he will regret but his new duties will mean attending several meetings and training sessions out of town. Unofficial investigations have been carried out to find a suitable replacement for the man known locally as 'Singlet.' (See Waimarino Bulletin 14 August). Mary Anne Gill
