DISABLED SKIERS

During the winter, eighty . disabled people have taken part in the Disabled Skiers Programme held on the Turoa Skifield. Many of the skiers came from the Ruapehu region. Disabilities within the group included hemiplegia, deafness, blindness, cerebral palsy, intellectually handicapped, incomplete paraplegic, spina bifida and amputees. For many of these people, being on a mountain was a unique experience, feeling and touching snow was a thrill for most of them. ' Skiing is a form of recreation in which the disabled can participate

alongside the able bodied. Several skiing families were able to bring their disabled children for a winter holiday safe in the knowledge that they could join in with the rest of the family. Each disabled skier skis with a helper who is there as a friend as well as an assistant. Many local residents volunteered to be helpers, something which organisers found invaluable. The scheme will take place again next year.
