Ruapehu region's summer potential promoted

The Ohakune Motel Association — comprising The Hobbit, Ohakune Court and the Alpine motels — is launching a campaign to promote Ohakune during the summer months. The campaign is also being supported and sponsored by several other service-related businesses in Ohakune. They have arranged a 3day seminar for members of the New Zealand media to visit Ohakune next week and see for themselves some of the summer activities and

attractions this region has to offer. Invitations have been sent out to representatives from radio, television, national newspapers, magazines and tourist beaureaux in Wellington and Auckland. Arrangements have been made to fly the Auckland media personnel from there to Taupo where they will be met and likewise, those from Wellington will be met at Wanganui from where they will travel to Ohakune next Monday. They are expected to be here by lunchtime — just in time for a trip up the Mountain Road aud a quick visit to the Karioi Lakes. On Tuesday they will be treated to a white-water rafting trip either on the Tongariro or Rangitikei Rivers before returning to the Hobbit where they will be shown films, slides and videos of the area and its

potential as a tourist resort in the summer months. Before returning to their city lifestyles on Wednesday they will travel to Pipiriki where jet-boat rides will be provided and they will see for themselves the potential of the Wanganui River as a •quiet haven for canoeists. The Ohakune Motel Association hopes that as a result of this seminar the whole Waimarino-Ruapehu region will benefit from the editorial exposure it will receive in the national press as well as on TV and radio. The region is certainly capable of accommodating and entertaining a steady flow of visitors throughout the summer months, said Motel Association spokesman Phil Jackson. "We have rafting, canoeing, jet-boating, horsetrekking, four-wheel-drive safaris, hunting, fishing, climbing, bush walks, golf, tennis and lots more."
