LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Unsafe buses As travelling members of the public we were shocked to see on one of the AHI mountain buses, canvas showing through • on the front left tyre. On another occasion with a bus load of school children and skiers the driver had to stop when coming down the mountain road. The handbrake would not hold the bus, and the driver had to leave it in gear, so he could get out and check the wheels. Smoke was seen (and smelt) to be pouring out froin the brakes. How can AHI allow people to pay $5 one way, and then expect them to ride on such unsafe vehicles? What a human catastrophe if one of those buses has a brake failure, or a blow-out while fully loaded! Forty people nearly equals the Wahine disaster! Come on AHI, get your priorities right. Concerned Skiers Reply to Concerned Skiers Thank you for providing the opportunity of reply to 'Concerned Skiers' letter of 18 October 1984. I would ask that the following be printed should you publish that letter: Thank you for pointing out these apparent defects. In all aspects of our operation, skifield management holds safety as top priority and I believe our record in this regard is second to none. The management of an operation such as Turoa
Skifields is a complex business due to its many operational facets and the varying conditions worked in. If at any time (hopefully rarely) part of our operation fails, in the opinion of a member of the public, to meet those standards then I generally can rely on that person informing me at the time."
