Meeting with Taumarunui Hospital Board
A meeting is to be held in Ohakune tonight (Tuesday 28 August) between representatives of the Ohakune and Raetihi Borough Councils and the Taumarunui Hospital Board. This meeting called at the request of the Taumarunui Hospital Board, is a preliminary investigation into the possible creation of an area health board under the new Health Act which allows such boards to encompass larger geographical areas. At last week's meeting of the Raetihi Borough Council Mayor Garrick Workman said that Raetihi had no intention of leaving the Wanganui Hospital Board but his council was prepared to listen to the proposals from Taumarunui Hospital Board representatives at
tonight's meeting. He had no idea at this stage of what they had in mind. Mayor Workman commended the recent report of the Wanganui Hospital Board which recommended, among other things, the retention of obstetric services at the Waimarino Hospital. "Compared with some other rural hospitals the Waimarino Hospital has been favourably treated as far as obstetric services are
concerned but the Raeithi Borough Council cannot afford to relax its vigilance when it comes to hospital services," said Mayor Workman. "In the meantime I would like, on behalf of the Council and residents of Raetihi, to thank the Wanganui Hospital Board investigating committee for their recommendation that obstetric services be retained at the Waimarino Hospital."
