SOCCER
The final game of the secondary schools soccer league was played on Saturday between Ruapehu Raetihi, and Ruapehu Ohakune at Ruapehu College. Whilst neither side could catch Tongariro, the result was to determine second place. Matthew Mowat opened the scoring after four minutes for Raetihi, Jason Shepherd replied „ immediately afterwards. Mowat scored again followed by a well taken Glenn Journeaux goal to take Raetihi to a useful lead. Jason Shepherd was able to peg back a goal shortly before half-time thus making the score 3-2 at the break. Mowat completed his hattrick fifteen minutes into the second half and three minutes later completed a memorable day with another goal. Ohakune captain Robin Taylor, was able to peg back . one more goal and the scene was set for a close finish. It was not to be however as Raetihi's Tony Phillips scored two quick goals ensuring a Raetihi victory by 7-3. Final points table: 1st Tongariro 18 pts, 2nd Ruapehu Raetihi 15 pts, Taumaranui 1 1 pts, Ruapehu Ohakune 1 1 pts, Ruapehu Raetihi 'B' 1 pt. On Sunday, Waimarino beat Waikune Prison 1 5-3 in the first round of the Tongariro Knockout Cup. Scorers: Waimarino — James Waierea 6, Tom Ball 4, Rob Eagle 2,
Glenn Journeaux 2, Jamie Dennison 1. Waikune — Shorty, Dargo and Deadman 1 each. Juniors: Under 10 — Turangi beat Raetihi 3-0. Under 12 — Turangi beat Raetihi 2-1.
