NETBALL

Tempers frayed at Ruapehu College on Saturday as the pressure of weeks of netball began to tell on many of the players. Karioi, in particular, ruined their chances of winning the championship by letting indiscipline creep into their piay. Two losses in as many weeks has meant that Raetihi 'A', who beat Postbank Red 35-15, has won the second round and along with that, the championship. In a haphazard game punctuated by some bad sportsmanship, United 'A' proved superior in all facets against Karioi, leading 1 1-5 at half-time then taking out the match by 22-16. To the many spectators though, the score was academic as they discussed

the incredible first half which saw a player from Karioi sent to the 'sin bin' for abusing the umpire. The incident occurred when Karioi's goal attack disagreed with a decision that umpire, Karen Ritchfield, made and proceeded to tell her so in language that Mrs Ritchfield found unsuitable. She had no option but to send the player off for two minutes for offensive language. The player in question said afterwards that the incident was not worth worrying about adding "I did nothing". Later, she was heard to say that "you just don't get sin-binned in netball!" Rona Tehuia, President of the local association, agreed with Mrs Ritchfield's decision. Because Saturday's games were the last for the season, there is very little the association can do to discipline the player. "Had this happened earlier in the season, she would be out," Mrs Tehuia said. "Karioi's behaviour this season has been disturbing, and perhaps a letter of reprimand will be sent by the association to the Karioi club. We will be having a meeting of the executive later in the week at which time we will resolve this problem." Continuing Mrs Tehuia said "People who stand on the sideline or in a game abusing the umpire are always the ones who never offer to officiate. Karen Ritchfield is an extremely good umpire and is always willing to help." In the 'B' Grade competition Postbank Blue captured the title by beating Ramblers in a crunch match, 29-26.
