RUGBY
Waimarino based teams all performed well in the recently completed Wanganui senior rugby competition. The performances of Ohakune have already been well recorded but my 'Team of the Year' award goes to Ruapehu College Old Boys who clawed their way up from the fifth division to the third, winning the fourth division title on Saturday 4
August to cap a remarkable season. Their 27-20 victory over Counties was well deserved and the relatively young side can now look forward to next year. Raetihi receive my 'Bad Luck' award after their 17-9 loss to Marist 3rds in the final of the Third Division. Never-the-less, they make a return to the second division next year with the hope that they remain there, unlike this season's unfortunate
relegation after the first round. Team of the Year' would have gone to unlucky Waiouru who had an outstanding season, promoted from third to second, and after the second round were top on points but they stumbled at the last hurdle. Their supporters must have been extremely disappointed to see them lose to Utiku Old Boys in the semifinals. The only consolation to them, is that Utiku beat Marton 16-6 in the final. However, Waiouru start next season in Division Two hopeful that they can emulate Ohakune's stirring success. Thank you to all players for providing us with some wonderful rugby, roll on next season and we hope more success.
