Wanganui Community College News
Thcre's a possibility that people living in National Park may be able to take advantage of the courses being offered by the Wanganui Regional Community College even though, strictly speaking, National Park is outside the Wanganui education area. The matter was being discussed at last month's meeting of the Wanganui Regional Community College in Wanganui. The Waimarino representative on the college board, Mr Bill Taylor, had said that several people in National Park had indicated an interest in the courses being offered by Wanganui but as they came under the jurisdiction of the Waikato Technical Institute in Hamilton, they might not have been eligible to attend courses run by the Wanganui Regional Community College. Wanganui Community College principal, Mr John
Scott, said that it would be possible to run courses at National Park and in Ohakune/ Raetihi for National Park residents providing consent was given by the Waikato Technical Institute. It was not uncommon for this to happen, said Mr Scott, and cited the example of a course being run at Marton by Palmerston
North Technical Institute which the Wanganui Community College was unable to provide. Mr Taylor said it made sense for people in National Park to attend courses in the Waimarino or have courses arranged in National Park by Wanganui rather than Hamilton which was so far (133 miles/214km) away.
