Waimarino United were beaten 2-0 on Sunday by a fit Waiouru team who battled to the end and were deserved winners. Although Waimarino were missing key players, this takes nothing away from the Waiouru victory. Ten minutes into the first half, Waimarino United had the chance to go into the lead when John Laurenson had an open goal, but he fired the ball over the top. It was a costly miss as shortly afterwards Waiouru took the lead when Steve Yates fired the ball into the back of the net from a corner. Ray Herewaka, had misdirected a kick back to his goalkeeper who was forced to concede the corner that led to the goal. Rob Eagle had a further chance for Waimarino but kicked the ball straight to the goalkeeper. The score re-
mained at 1-0 until halftime. The second half was a scrappy affair with Waimarino, in particular making too many loose passes and were not supporting their team-mates in an attacking position. It was from a break-down in play that Waiouru scored their second goal and as the Waimarino defence was forward searching for an equaliser, Ross McPherson had only the goalkeeper to beat. This was an impressive performance from Waiouru while Waimarino seemed to be lacking strong runners and players that can challenge for the ball. Scorers: S. Yates, R. McPherson. The Ohakune Junior Soceer Club travelled to Turangi on Sunday 22 July and played two games against the Turangi Club. The juniors played a hard fought match which resulted in a 2-2 draw. Lance Callaghan scored twice for Ohakune.
