RUGBY

Waimarino-based teams continue to perform well in the Wanganui senior championship. On Saturday 30 June, Ohakune defeated All Black Bill Osborne 's Kaierau team 11-6, Waiouru accounted for Athletic 22-0, Raetihi showed fine form in beating Hunterville 27-0 and Ruapehu College Old Boys look set for the Third Division next season after their 30-0 win against Marton Old Boys. Ohakune now lead the first division with 8 points and are certain to qualify for the top four competition once the present round is completed. Brothers Kellick and Lachlan Harding both scored tries with Lachlan adding a penalty goal whilst Kaierau's Gerald Hipango put over two penalties. In appalling conditions at Ohakune, the home team continued their open rugby tactics of this season but the ground was too heavy for such adventurous play.

This Saturday they play Marist once again at home. Waiouru remain second in the Second Division, on points difference only, after Chin Hill, Joe Sprangers, Errol Brown, Brian Toki and Tama Hiroti posted a try each only one of which was converted. Waiouru are at home to T.C.O.B. this Saturday as are Raetihi who play Waverley.
