OHAKUNE'S WATER SUPPLY
Following discussions with its Consulting Engineer regarding the future of the watermain (currently carried over the Main Trunk Line on Railway Bridge 168) Ohakune town clerk, Colin Turner, reported that NZR Wanganui had received a reply from the Head Office Bridging Engineer "who apparently has treated the matter somewhat lightly." NZR Bridge 168 is the middle one of three bridges straddling the railway track at Ohakune Junction. It is due for demolition and won't be replaced when Bridges 169 (over the Ohakune Mountain Road) and 167 (connecting Upper Thames Street, Soldiers Road and Ruapehu Road) have been constructed. A new Bridge 169 is presently under construction and is expected to carry its . first electric locomotive in about 12 month's time. No work has yet begun on Bridge 167. The future of the watermain between the north and south of the main railway track is of vital concern to the Borough as it is one of only two mains carrying water into town from the reservoir ... the other is carried on Bridge 167 which is currently closed to traffic. The matter will be referred back to the Ohakune Borough Councii by the Council's Consulting Engineer when a satisfactory reply is received from the District Engineer, Wanganui who was not satisfied with the original response from the Head Office Bridging Engineer.
