Among the 400 or so skiers that were attracted to Turoa's Valley Rope Tow on the first day of the 1984 ski season was 72-year old Gwendoline Richmond of Ngaio, Wellington. She donned skis and took to the slopes for the first time in 30 years on Saturday 2 June, Queen's Birthday Weekend. Here she receives some friendly and expert advice from Turoa Skifield chief ski instructor and ski school director, John Ball. Skiing on the Valley Rope Tow area was made possible by generous helpings of snow from Turoa's new Boyne snow-making machine.
