LSV's arrive in Waiouru
Fifteen unemployed youths arrived at Waiouru Army Camp on Sunday to take part in the 'Limited Service Volunteer' scheme which has been set up within the Army Training Group to provide the unemployed with opportunities to develop or improve their job skills. The programme runs for twenty weeks, four of which were spent at Linton Army Camp where they received basic training. The final 16 weeks will be spent in Waiouru where LSV will receive training in a chosen trade with other objectives being to increase the self discipline and confidence of each individual. We spoke to two of the LSV Diane Monaghan and Steven Ramsden both from Turangi. Diane has been unemployed for VA years and while here will be given
basic training as a cook, Steven on the other hand has only been unemployed for three weeks upon leaving school and he will receive training as a mechanic. Both Diane and Steven found the discipline hard to adjust to in the first few days of training but feel the scheme is well worth it and hope their job prospects will be brighter once the programme ends. There will be two such schemes run through the Army Training Group each year with 1 50 youths in each scheme, split up on a regional basis, Waiouru receiving 15 LSV. The New Zealand Air Force is also participating in the scheme and they will train 200 LSV a year and the New Zealand Navy will train 100.
