RAETIHI BOROUGH COUNCIL NEWS

Continued from last week's report of the Council meeting held on 29 February . ★ ★ ★ A total of $101 in public donations was collected over the Raetihi Borough Council counter for the Mayor's Southland Flood Relief Fund. The fund is now closed but donations can still be sent directly to Invercargill. ★ ★ ★ A letter from a number of young people was received at last month's Raetihi Borough Council meeting requesting the provision of a break-dancing pad some^Aere in town. ^^After discussing various alternatives — site, portability, protective covering required etc — council decided that the young letter-writers should liaise with the borough works foreman. ★ ★ ★ Council decided that the rental for caravans in the Borough Motor Camp should be set at $25 per week for two adults and $8 per school-age child per week. ★ ★ ★

Council adopted a remit to lend their support to the creation of a 'fish-pass' near the headwaters of the Makotutu River from which Raetihi obtains its town water supply. Several years ago when a weir was installed north of the Tohunga Road to create a reservoir, a fish pass to allow spawning trout to reach the headwaters of the Makotutu River was overlooked. The wildlife service was prepared to reinstate access for spawning fish but required financial help. Mayor Workman said that the council could hardly be seen as a promoter of tourism in the area if it wasn't prepared to contribute to one of the area's tourist facilities. ★ ★ ★ Mayor Workman reported that the Borough Works Foreman, Craig Ryland, had proposed a scheme to bring in various historical artifacts and install them in permanent sites around town as a constant reminder of the area's early development.
