Waimarino Squash Season Opens
The 1984 squash season commences in the Waimarino district this weekend with the Waimarino Squash Club's annual Turoa Open Tournament. Entries for the event have been pleasing and organisers are anticipating an exciting weekend of squash. One of the more interesting personalities playing is Joanne Williams of the Taihape club. Joanne is currently ranked third in New Zealand behind world ranked Susan Devoy and Robyn Blackwood and played for New Zealand in the World Championships held in Perth, Australia towards the end of last year. She not only performed with great distinction personally but was also part of a teani that performed with merit in finishing third behind Australia and Great Britain. With the women's event
shaping up to be a rather one-sided contest, much interest will be shown in the men's open with the top seed Tony Fuller of Whakatane and Dennis Sharrock, runner-up in the recent Wanganui Open, providing the attention in the eight man draw. Loeal players will be looking forward to perform well in the graded events and the tournament
provides a guide for early season form. With interclub commencing in April this year, many players see the event as a way to improve their match fitness. For those people interested in joining the Waimarino Squash Club. Raetihi, please contact either the men's club captain Marty McGrath or women's captain Noeline Pikari.
