WAIMARINO GOLF CLUB HOSTS EAGLES
The Waimarino Golf Club played host on Sunday 19 February to members of The Eagles' Golfing Societies of Waikato, ManawatuWanganui and Taranaki. The Eagles Association, not to be confused with the 'Two Under' Club, was founded in Auckland in April 1956 and has steadily grown since, to a respectable membership nationwide of approximately 1200. The aims of the society are to encourage an active membership of men who have given ste.rling service to golf through serving on committees and generally helping in the running of their own golf club. Men are invited to become 'Eagles' and once they join, become part of a Society within their own district. The Manawatu-Wanganui Golfing Society was formed in 1965, the current president being Jack Earle of Wanganui.
Interestingly enough, the only life member of the society is Hal Manson of Raetihi, still a keen member of the Waimarino Golf Club and a past president of the Eagles Association. Although he did not play in the tournament himself, his assistance was called upon as starter and general organiser. The tournament is conducted annually in February by the Waimarino Golf Club and this year's one was particularly successful, attracting 110 entries. The wives of Eagle members were also invited to participate. Results Men: 1st Jock Wilson (Te Aroha), 2nd Roly Shand (Manawatu), 3rd Dave Holden (Marton). Ladies: 1st Dene Hopcroft (Tokoroa), 2nd Shirley Harriman (Apiti), 3rd Kay White (Morrinsville). Loeal Men: lst Ron Southee, 2nd Colin Turner, 3rd Stu Magee. Loeal Ladies: 1st Dianne Martin, 2nd Hazel Woollett, 3rd Rosalie Goile. Twos: Dave Holden, Roly Shand, Don Kruse, Joe Fothergill. Keith Woollett and Gary Allerby from Waimarino Golf club also shot twos.
