Turoa Tumblers

The word is spreading — Ohakune produces crisp carrots, super sprouts ... and great gymnasts! The number of placings in national competitions, gold and silver medals brought home by our local gymnasts is growing. And, just as significantly, one only needs to watch any Turoa Tumbler's session to see the kind of enthusiasm and effort that makes for a successful sporting club. Glynn and Wendy Hubbard, together with a dedica'ed team of parents who help with coaching, transport, fundraising etc. are the Tumbler's greatest asset. Their dedication to the club is a rather humbling example for those other: "it's sports practice/ fundraising/ meeting time ... but maybe next time" thinkers. The hours alone, given in coaching (in excess of 1-6 hours per week) are daunting but it must be another task again to approach each session cheerfully — coaching beginners, repeating advice ■and instructions and all the while dispensing praise and encouragement. Add personal training sessions, providing transport to other centres in their own free time, fundraising efforts, the regular newsletter and administration ... and free weekends must be something of a luxury for the Hubbards. In conclusion I note that the Turoa Tumblers Club has, and has had, support

from many people and organisations, and I don't wish to minimise their very worthwhile contributiofis. However, the purpose of this letter is to salute the dedication of the coaches who created an opportunity for Waimarino youth and then kept the club alive by their own example. Well done Glyn and Wendy Hubbard and all the other members of the team who have coached a total of 227 young gymnasts since the club was founded 5 years ago.
