Tumblers miss out on Sports and Recreation grants
"This is the first time that the Turoa Tumblers haven't received a grant," said a disappointed and puzzled coach, Glyn Hubbard, who first learned of the decision by the Waimarino Joint Consultative Committee for Sport and Recreation in a newspaper article last week. "We do a lot to promote the Waimarino community — including Ohakune, Raetihi and Waiouru — in our travels and competitions even to the extent of distributing local literature and bags of carrots, so I'm naturally disappointed that the club didn't receive so much as a token grant," said Glyn Hubbard. "Not only do we do a lot to help the youngsters in our community but also spend a lot of time raising funds to allow our youngsters to travel and compete against other teams". "Ferhaps our fund-raising efforts have been too successful and it was thought we didn't need the money," said Mr Hubbard, "but that shouldn't have made any difference because if a club is deserving it should have got something — no matter how small — rather than nothing at all," he added.
"Ferhaps if all the successful applicants had got a few dollars less (say $10-$20) there would have been enough for everyone". "This year we wanted some financial help to assist with the purchase of additional safety equipment such as decelerating landing mats. Unless our equipment is up to national and international standards, our youngsters will be at a disadvantage and we will not be able to attract visiting teams and tourists to the Waimarino," he said. "Yes, we have had grants for the last 3-4 years - and we are grateful for these — but is that any reason why the committee should withdraw their support of the club now?," he asked.
