1983 Fishing season opens

Waimarino Wildlife ranger, Dave Johnson, reports a good start to the fishing season which opened on Saturday 1 October. Fishing on the Manganui -a-Te-Ao River was particularly popular with murky water conditions on the Saturday suiting threadluring and fly-fishing on the Sunday being more successful with clearer water. More fish than usual were weighed and measured. Rainbows slightly outnumbered brown trout caught but browns were of a larger size with some twokilogram jack fish being taken. There were many visiting fishermen to the Mamganui-a-Te-Ao River with Wanganui and Taupo anglers choosing to fish the river over opening weekend.
