Transport problems affect rugby
Some 70 junior rugby players in Raetihi had a disappointing morning on Saturday, June 25th. Because of a lack of transport to get the boys to Taihape, the Raetihi teams had to default to Taihape. The situation was made even more disappointing because the Raetihi boys had had four wins on their home ground against Taihape, earlier in the season, and three of the four teams due to play against Taihape, had not lost a game. This year, for the first time, the region's Saturday morning teams are playing for trophies. Four teams from each of Raetihi, Waiouru, Turangi and Taihape are playing in each of the four grades — midget, junior, intermediate and senior. Bruce Boswell, president of Raetihi Saturday morning rugby, said that it was a pity that many parents weren't prepared to help when games had to be played away. "After all, other teams come and play us on our home ground. A draw is sent out to all parents showing where games are to be played" he said "And it's not just our boys who were let down. In Taihape another 70 odd boys had to be sent home without a game. I just hope we don't have to be embariassed in this way again."
each Saturday but as many as 12 or 14 cars are needed to get all the boys to their away commitments.
