CRICKET.
Seniors v. Juniors was the Aratapu practice match on Saturday afternoon. The former played nine men and a boy, and the latter fourteen all told. The Juniors went in first and put up 21 runs; this was not deemed sufficient and they were put in to try again with different bowling. They put up 26 runs and then the Seniors batted. T. French with 36 was the highest scorer; Graham 13, G. Nield 12, T. Nield 10 being the only other doubles, and the total reached 99. The local fixture for tomorrow is to be played at Tatarariki, and is the first meeting this season of that Club and Mangawhare, The Mill settlement has a determined team of players who have had some practice, and unless the old members of the Mangawhare G. display more patriotism their Club cannot score a win. Tatarariki G.C.—Messrs T. Elliott, C. Odium, C. and F. Matthews, A. W. and 11. Legge, W. Smith, F. Campbell, W. Miller, H. Tidmarsh, and T, Bassett. Mangawhare G.C.—Messrs I. Mansill, W. Fitzpatrick, A. Burton, R. Masefield, G. Robinson, J. McKay, A. McLean, J. Blight, V. Lambert, J. Stehr, and W, Johns, No reply has yet been received from Auckland or Manukau Cricketers re the proposed matches with a Wairoa team. If favorable replies should come local players will have no time to lose in arranging for practices and the trip. An Aratapu Eleven leaves this evening to play the Port Albert Club tomorrow. Some difficulty has been experienced in getting the Club’s best eleven to travel, and it is very uncertain now who the players will ultimately be. They will probably be chosen from the following ; Messrs Marcroft, French, Nields (3), Graham, Stallworthy, Morgan, Lowrie, pßutland, Slater, Walker, and Cunningham. The s.s. Wairoa has been chartered to leave at Midnight, and return from Port Albert at eight o’clock tomorrow evening. Several ladies and other friends contemplate making the trip with the cricketers.
In the All Saints v. Auckland, second Junior contest, the latter were all disposed of for 7 runs, Crookes, formerly of Aratapu C.C., playing for All Saints, secured 6 wickets for 3 runs, and Moir 3 wickets for 4 runs.
The Parnell and United Senior fixture resulted in a tie, about the first time such a result has been chronicled in Auckland and senior cricket. When United’s last man went to the wickets they required three runs to win and excitement ran high. Two singles were run and the scores were equal, then over was called and Lawson, the Parnell captain, took the ball and bis first delivery scattered the stumps and saved defeat. The South Australians achieved a great performance in beating Stoddarts eleven by six wickets, after having to face a first innings of 477. Only one more wicket fell in making the required runs, Reedman being disposed of for 83. G. Giffiin’s score was not out 58, Darling not out 37, extras 4; total 226 for 4 wickets.
The Englishmen evidently intend to retrieve the laurels snatched from them by South Australia. In their match with Victoria Stoddart winning the toss took first innings and at the close of the day the score was 379 for 4 wickets—Stoddart 77, McLaren (not out) 220, Peel (not out) 4S being chief scorers.
