TE KOPURU.

The opening of the Te Kopuru Lawu Tennis ground for the season was very successfully carried out. Besides the members of the Club there were present some fifteen or sixteen visitors from the Dargaville Club who came by invitation. The courses, which are three in number, were found to be in good playing order and were kept going all the afternoon. Those not engaged in play were happy and contented in the opportunity of a social chat with the many friends gathered together. The afternoon was fine and pleasant till five o’clock when a heavy shower of rain put a damper on the whole. The ladies provided a cup of tea and other refreshment for the benefit of those assembled and their pleasant faces and cheery smiles shewed their realisation of the blessedness of giving. As to the play at the nets —there was some ofall sorts—the good, the better and the best. When after a little practice, the Kopuru chosen meet the up-river Club it will be seen that the younger Club can bold its own. A meeting of the Te Kopuru Accident Soctety was held in the Public Library on November 12th. Mr J. Molloy was in the chair ; the other committeemen present being Messrs T. Smith, A. W. Legge, J. Davern, F. Foreman and C. Leabourn. The Balance Sheet for the year showed—Receipts, Cash Balance 1893 £2l 6s, Contributions £2O 9s 3d, Interest 9s Sd ; Total £424s lid. Expenditure, Reliefs paid £8 7s Balance in band £33 17s lid Increase £l2 11s lid. The number of members is 35. The Committee recommended the distribution of £lO lCs as a bonus amongst the members, and the payment of £3 3s to the Secretary for his trouble. These suggestions were adopted and it was resolved that the subscription for the coming year be one shilling per uaontk. Mr C. Odium was authorised to enrol members and collect fees from amongst those working at the Aratapu mill. The following were elected a Committee for the new year —Messrs J. Molloy, A. W. Legge, C. Odium, T. Smith, F. Foreman and J. Davern, the first named being appointed Chairman. Mr C. Leabourne was re-elected Secretary.

The Waitemata is loading here for Sydney and, as is usual with her, she is filling up rapidly. Some vessels take their timber in very leisurely but it is not so with Captain Campbell who believes in taking it in as fast as it can be given him. Our cricketers have not neglected their practice and should give Mangawhare some trouble on Saturday afternoon, If the upriver players do not put more spirit into their play than they did against Aratapu they will most assuredly again suffer defeat. It is no use falling out with the ground and playing in a don’t care sort of way.
