THE ARATAPU FIRE.
As may be seen in another column the Directors of the Kauri Timber Company tender their sincere thanks to all persons who assisted in suppressing the fire in Monk Street on the morning of the 12th instant, and while drawing attention to this we would like to correct one or two wrong impressions that may have got about in consequence of one or two wrong impressions that may have got about in consequence of one or two portions of our report of the fire. We said that “ the truck fire engine was found to be out of order and would not work,” but this, we are informed, was scarcely correct. The engine was in good working order as subsequent inspection showed, and had, we are told, been regularly attended to before. The reason why it could not be worked at the fire was because the hose to connect it with water was not long enough to reach the water in the well. We also learn that although the whistle was blown chat morning at the usual time some bands overslept themselves and were very late in starting workThe management fully excused such, and in the case of one employee who was injured and could not do his work for two days a man was put in his place and both men were paid full time. When reporting the incidents of the fire we had no intention of reflecting upon the local management and have much pleasure in making the above explanations.
