MEETINGS OF HOUSEHOLDERS.

ARATAPU. Only thirteen householders attended the meeting ai Aratapu for the election of a school committee. Mr T, Nield, chairman of outgoing Committee, read the report for past yea l '. In it the Committee congratulated themselves upou the removal of the platform round the school and the substitution of burnt clay ; it had proved such a satisfactory substitute that the Committee had conserved their funds in order that more of the same work might be done. Arbor Day had been instituted and a lumber of trees planted with fair success. The Standard Examinations were not satisfactory, but this was accounted for by the change in teachers, and the irregular attendance of scholars. Briefly the results of examination were: Presented 162, absent 3. excepted 8, failed 38, passed 61. The average attendance for March quarter was : Boys 62, Girls 82, 141. The Education Board have increased the grant for school purposes by £5, and the Committee also received £ls for the purchase of school requisites. The Balance Sheet was read by the Secretary and showed that the Commit tee had an income of £69 6s Id, made up as follows:—balance from previous year £l6 12s lOd, grants ftoui Board £37 10s, grazing, rent, &u. £ls

3s 3d, whilst the expenditure had been : for cleaning £l7 16s, fuel 15s, repairs £6 11s, maps and books £1 17s lOd, school requisites £3 7s 2d, burning clay £l4 10s, planting trees £1 11s 6d, and sundries 12s 8d ; leaving a balance in hand of £22 4s lid. Having given an account of the late Committee’s work the Chairman vacated his seat and Mr T, Slater was voted to the chair. Messrs Corkill, W. Bassett, G. Mills, T. Nield, T. Slater, and W. R. Smith’s, nominations were placed before the meeting having been previously posted, and Messrs McCowan, G. Smith, T. Bassett, S. Wilson, and W, Davidsan, were nominated by those present. The ballot resulted in the election of Messrs Corkill, W. Bassett, T. Bassett, S. Wilson, G. Mills, T. Nield and T. Slater. A resolution was passed by the meeting disapproving of the grazing of horses in the school play ground, and directing the incoming committee to deal with the matter. The new Committee appointed Mr Nield to be Chairman and Mr Wilson, Secretary. TE KOPURU. About thirty-five gentlemen attended in the Kopuru Hall on Monday for the purpose of electing a school Committee. Mr R. M. Smith was voted to the chair. The report of the outgoing Committee was read as follows—Balance in hand April 1892, £7 11s Sd ; Paid for cleaning school, £l4 14s 6d; Fuel, 9s 6d; Repairs, £4 16s 6d; Furniture and freight, £5 Ss 9d ; Special grant repairs, £5 9s 8d; Rent of Redhill school, £3 ; Printing, 15s ; Telegrams, 3s 3d. Total expenditure, £34 17s 2d. Balance in hand, £l7 Os lid. Special grant of £5 for Tatarariki school was expended: Timber £1 10s, cartage 10s. wages £1 los In explanation of their being such a largo balance in hand the Chairman said the grant had only been paid very recently. School attendance June quarter 1592. No. on Roll, 111, average attendance 90'9 ; December quarter. No. on Roll, 111, average attendance, 99'8. After the holidays the attendance fell off greatly, but was now again improving. March quarter, 1893. No. on roll, 110, average attendance 85'2. Messrs N. McLeod and R. Vincent were the only nominations which had been sent in to the Chairman, and the following nominations were made at the meeting : Messrs R. M. Smith. Jos. Molloy , G. Simpson, T. Webb, J. Brockliss, J. Anderson and G. W. Davidson. Messrs Seymour. C. Leabourne and W. S. Smith were appointed scrutineers and the ballot taken resulted in the eh c ion of Messrs Webb, Smith, Brockliss, Molloy, McLeod, Vincent and Simpson.

The first meeting of the Committee took place immediately after. Mr R. M. Smith was elected Chairman of Committee and Mr Brockliss, Secretary. The meetings were fixed for the first Tuesday in every month, failing a quorum the meeting to stand adjourned till next month. The Chairman was authorised t© procure furniture to the amount of £3. It was decided to pay monthly visits to the school and the Committee were divided into parties for the purpose. The Secretary was instructed to get copies of the Act for each Committeeman.
