FOOTBALL.

Mr Edward Hoben, Secretary of the New Zealand Rugby Union, has received a cable from Sydney stating that the New South Wales and Queensland Rugby Unions had met and fixed the following dates for test matches with the New Zealand team :—New South Wales, Ist and Bth July ; Queensland, 15th and 22nd July. These dates will be confirmed at the annual meeting of the-New Zealand Rugby Union on Saturday night. Erom Ashburton comes the news, even thus early in the season, of the death of a young man from injuries received in a football match.

The Kopuru and Aratapu boys had a preliminary game on Saturday afternoon in Mr Webb’s paddock, when the latter were the victors by seven points to nil. Tries were got by H. and F. Lowrie and from one of these a goal was kicked. A meeting of the Aratapu E. 0. was held on Saturday evening in the Band of Hope room for the purpose of electing delegates to the Wairoa Rugby Union. There were only thirteen members present and Messrs E. Bassett, T. Nield and Stallworthy wore elected delegates.

George Walker, late of Aratapu, broke his collar boue last Saturday while playing football at Devonport. A meeting of the Kopuru E. C. was held on Monday evening in Social hall when Messrs Forsaick, j os. Molloy and W. S. Smith were appointed delegates to the W. R. Union, and Mr W. O’Brien was appointed vice-captain. Mr R. Hutne, a member of the old Mangawhare Club, has called a meeting of those interested in the formation of a Mangawhare Football Club for to-monow evening in the Kaihu Hotel, at 8 p.m. sharp. There seems every prospect of a strong Club being formed, and it is intended by the promoters to join with the Wairoa Rugby Union. Trumps. The Dargaville Hokianga Rugby Union programme so fully put tefore the public of late has always been looked upon as an impracticable one* by footballers, but it was thought the opioidng matches would have been reached. Even this, it seems, will not be accomplished as it has been found impossible to work a Dargaville Club without active footballers. Euchred.

The Maropiu footballers have proved loyal to the Wairoa Union even under con • siderable pressure, and deserve the hearty thanks of all true Wairoa footballers. A meeting of their Club is to be held to-mor-row evening at Maropiu. The Club has some excellent material and it is hopied they will be successful this season for they work under many disadvantages. The Maropiu delegate at the Union meeting was generally voted a fine fellow.
