France and [Russia both disavow any connection with his act’on. Ismail Pasha, ex Khedive, is suspected of instigating his grandson. The excitement amongst the natives in the country is unabated. The Khedive apologised and appointed Riaz Pasha premier. The French press sympathises with Khedive, The Opposition press in England commends Roseberry’s energetic action, which Gladstone supported by a special meeting of the Cabinet. Though Fakre Pasha has had to retire the New Eygptian Ministry includes several new anti-English members ; but the British authorities arc satisfied because Riaz Pasha is a strong supporter. The Khedive undertakes not to again make a change in Ministry without consulting England. French Disapproval. In the Chamber of the Deputies Deville replying to a question by DeLouche said the Government recognised the seriousness of England’s interference with independence of Khedive, and had instructed M. Waddingtno, French Ambassador in London, to interview Lord Boseberry on the subject. The French press is extremely irritated and alleges England’s action practically amounts to annexation. Triple Alliance ApprovesI lie Austrian, Italian, and German press warmly approves the stand taken by England and condemns the childish folly of the Khedive. The Panama Scandal. Paris, January I9th, In the case against the Panama Canal Directors, the Public Prosecutor made severe strictures on the conduct of M. Eiffel, and demanded that all defendants should be imprisoned without the option of a tine ; contending that the infliction of a fine was not sufficient punishment for such wholesale swindling as has been perpetrated by accused. England and Morocco. The French squadron in Morocco has been ordered to act in concert with the Spanish. Morocco has finally accepted de nand of British Government. Five thousand dollars were offered as indemnity for murder of British subjects at Tangiers, but the amount was regarded as inadequate. The English Government demands further reparation. Le Caron ShadowedIn consequence of the revelations made in his book it is believed that Le Caron is being shadowed with sinister motive. The police entertain great anxiety for his safety. Victorian Government Defeated. Melbourne, January I9th The motion of want of confidence moved by Mr Patterson was carried by 45 to 42. Mr Shiels, premier, promised that no factious opposition should be offered to the new Ministry. Sale of Property. Motuihi Island, 724 acres was sold by auction to Mr Lawford of the Bank of Australasia for £3 per acre. It is considered a good price though the only bid made. New Zealand Rifle Champion. Rifle championship was won by Arthur Ballinger of Webington. Gerard, his brother, was a former champion. Doughty was unwell and did not shoot up tu form. Injury to Waikato Crops.
