THE KAURI TIMBER COMPANY.
INTERVIEW WITH THE PREMIER. The Premier and the Hon. Mr Cadman were interviewed last evening by a deputation of Auckland members who represented that the Kauri Timber Company wore doubly taxed on their standing timber. The deputation included, Messrs Houston. T. Thompson, R. Thompson, Kelly, Shera, Lawry and the Hon. Mr Mitchelson. Mr Houston stated that the present Company were taxed upon standing timber as upon land, and that they had to pay income tax upon the same property when the timber was disposed of. He expressed the opinion that the Company were labouring under a great hardship. In answer to a question, he stated that this objection applied in some cases to freehold as well as to leasehold land. He mentioned that the Opanake block was valued at £38,425, on which the Company had only a timber right, and that the estimated value of timber was £2,000. The Premier said he had already looked into this matter, and did not see how any relief could be given, but if the Company were called upon to pay double he would see what could be done, but at the same time he pointed out that this would only occur in the year in which the valuation took place. He promised to go into the matter again very carefully.
