KNIGHTS OF LABOUR.

The quarterly convocation of the above organisation met on Tuesday in St. George’s Hall, Newton. In addition to the town and suburban delegates, representatives of the Society were present from Gisborne and Tairua. Apologies for non-attendance were received from Hamilton and Aratapu. A large amount of business was transacted, dealing with the communications received from the Premier of the colony, from the PostmasterGeneral, and the Ministers of Mines and Lauds. After some discussion, letters were forwarded to the Government dealing with matters of interest to the Society, such as the Boards of ArbitrationJandConciliation Bill and the Friendly Societies Bill. It was decided that an endeavour should be made to bring about at an early date a conference between the various labour organisations and the Knights of Labour in this city. All these Societies have kindred interests, and it is proper that they should combine together to advance these interests. It is only such conferences that they can be brought

n contact with each other and their various aims and principles fully discussed. A resolution was passed later on in the evening reaffirming the opposition that the Knights of Labour had expressed towards the totalisator. This was to the effect that in their opinion the totalisator was calculated to do an infinite harm to the community, It encouraged gambling by affording people an easy way of tempting fortune. On consideration of the Mortgage Bill it was decided that a resolution be forwarded to the Government expressing the approval of the Society with regard to the principles embodied in the various clauses of the Bill, and also at the same time it was agreed that a resolution be sent stating that the District Assembly approved of the Shop Hours Bill. The Assembly especially commends that portion of the Bill which makes the particular afternoon appointed for a holiday a matter of local choice Owi-g to his residing out of town and the consequent difficulty he experences in attending the meetings of the Society, the District Master Workman has resigned his position. The District Foreman was appointed to fill the vacancy. —‘Evening Star.’
