FREE LABOUR.
AT WHAKATU FREEZING WORKS.
ALL UNIONISTS STOP.
HASTINGS, March 16.
Notwithstanding tho short notice, a ready response was made to the Whakatu Freezing Works appeal to free labour last evening, and this morning the works were being carried on with 38 volunteers, and. others are coming. Tho A. and P. Society’s Autumn Show, which is just concluding, prevented many from starting, but these say that they will go on immediately after if required. A meeting .Of the unionists of tho other departments at Whakatu met this morning, and it resulted in all of the men ceasing work at noon. The company say that there will be no trouble in filling their places, and anticipate that there will be no difficulty in carrying ion with volunteers to the close of the season. The unionists are displaying no hostility, and everything 1 is quiet. The two other works are not affected.—(P.A.).
