BEAUTY CONTESTS DENOUNCED
AN ARCHBISHOP’S DEMAND. EMPHATIC AND PROMPT ACTION / , NEEDED. (Received Monday, 7 p.m.). - ( SYDNEY, March 14. In a letter read in. Roman Catholic churches on Sunday, Archbishop Duhig utters a solemn, warning against beauty competitions. He declares they require emphatic and prompt action on .the part of the church. He denounces them as an exploitation of girls’ physical beauty for the purpose of increasing the circulation of newspapers, and advertising towns and business houses, causing an immense amount of harm to the simple home life of the community, and the high moral standard of womanhood. It was high time that the Government and municipalities provided adequate protection against the moral dangers and sordid ends of these unseemly competitions.—(P.A.).
