SOUTH WAIRARAPA ITEMS.

Harvest thanksgiving services will be conducted at the Featherston Methodist Church to-mOrrow. Tennis.

The Carterton tennis team to play Kelburn at Carterton to-day is as follows: Booth, Bunny, George, Hall, MeK.ellar, Boydhouse, Steel, Taverner. Following is the Carterton team to play Featherston, at Featherston: Misses N. Feast, C. Peters, Mrs. Crawley, Misses Zillwood, Armstrong, and BerriU; Messrs Goodin, Armstrong, Candy, Dudson, Olsen, and Krahagen. Emergencies: Phillips, Brown, Budd. Racing Club. The stewards of the Wairarapa Racing Club met at Featherston on Thursday afternoon. The treasurer reported a credit balance of £686 13s 4d and receipts for the month at £362 Is 6d. Accounts totalling £2BB 6s 3d were passed for payment. It was decided to. concrete the floor of three loose boxes. It was decided that tenders be called for printing the books for race meetings. The disposing of one of the old horses was left to the course committee. The course implements are to be overhauled, and a new typewriter procured for the office. Twenty chairs are to be purchased for tho stewards’ stand and trainers’ quarters. The stewards present decided to present a chair each for the stand, and the money so contributed will be utilised for the purchase of seats for the lawn. Mr. W. J. Martin was accorded a vote of thanks for the donation of a stove and hot water plant for the outside stand. A vote of condolence was passed with Messrs Q. and A. Donald on the death of their sister, Mrs W. McKenzie.

GREYTOWN.

(“The Age” Special). It was hoped that the New South Wales bowlers would pay a visit to the Greytown bowling green en route to .Wellington on Thursday, but to the (•appointment of bowsers no stop was made. Horticulture. .

Mr. F. Bull of Greytown continues in prize-winning vein. This well-known grower, competing at the Masterton Autumn Show in the cottagers’ class for cut flowers secured six firsts for cactus and peony dahlias. In fruit and vegetable classes a former well-known Grey town exhibitor, Mr. T. Ingley (Te Ore Ore) secured seven first and other placings. Personal.

Mr. and Mrs. H. D. Bayliss and family and Mrs. C. J. Jury, who spent some days at Seatoun during the Royal visit to Wellington, have returned to Grey town. Mrs. Hugh Morison of Glenmorven, has gone to Rotorua and Te Aroha for a holiday, and Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Morison are spending some two or three months at Rotorua. Athletics.

The local senior three-quarter, J. Stringfellow, although short of training, won the 220 yards handicap on Wednesday from the 17 yards’ mark. Stringfellow, although residing at present in the Lower Valley, will again turn out for the Greytown Football Club, which will, however, be without the services of that very consistent back, Peter Jury, who will be away from the Wairarapa during the football season.

Epidemics. Chicken pox and influenza with pleurisy conditions are rife in Greytown. Numbers of school children are sufferers and adults suffering from influenza are liable to serious chest complications. Plunket Society.

The monthly meeting of the Greytown Plunket Society was held on Thursday, Mrs. J. F. Thompson (vicepresident) presiding, Mesdames A. H. Bull, R. H. Anker, A. M. Haigh, E. Thomas, S. Stevens and Miss Burton being present. A vote” of thanks to the Grey town Town Lands Trustees for their grant of £5 was passed. It was decided to hold a cake stall next Friday at Bouzaids, Crown Theatre, in aid of the funds. Cricket.

A team from the Midnight Frolics, at present playing in Wellington, is expected to try conclusions with the Ahikouka Cricket Club (unbeaten this season). The Thespians include some fair cricketers aid the Ponsords and Macartneys of the local picnic club will need to show their best form to retain their record. Greytown Mothers’ League.

A meeting of the Greytown branch <o£ the Mothers’ League recently formed through the instrumentality of Lady Fergusson, was held at St. Luke’s Schoolroom, on Thursday afternoon, Mrs. W. A. Tate (president) being in the chair. The subject.for discussion was Obedience in Children,” which was ably debated by Mesdames W. A. Tate, Slater, R. H. Anker and the Rev. W. F. Stent.

Fruitgrowing. The apple crop promises to be very good arid the New Zealand sale prices should be satisfactory, although there is uncertainty regarding English prices. Sturmers and Jonathans promise a good harvest, although Cox’s Orange is not such a heavy cropper as usual this year. Birds have displayed displeasing activity during the last few weeks in many orchards, despite the war k waged by .gun, poison and other agencies.

Croquet Club. The Greytown Croquet Club is at present playing off its club championships and competition games. The greens are in splendid order, but vandals have descended to removing flowers from the attractive borders which are the special care of Mrs. H. Humphries, one of the club’s most active members. Soldiers’ Memorial Park.

Splendid progress has been made in levelling the new tennis courts in the Memorial Park, which will be available for play next season. The children’s

playing area is also being extended and levelled, and the park will undoubtedly be one of the show places of the Wairarapa. _

Surprise Party. Mrs. T. Fisher, of Kuratawhiti Street, celebrated her 79th birthday on Wednesday, when a large party of friends paid her a surprise visit in honour of the occasion.

Wairarapa Rifle Association Meeting. Marksmen from all parts of the Dominion are arriving for the association meeting on Monday, and a good entry is assured. The Maori markers, whq are this week marking at the Army meeting at Trentham, return to undertake similar duties at Papawai. Shooters affirm that these Maoris are the best in the Dominion. FEATHERSTON. (“The Age” Special). Miss N. Carlyon, a pupil of the Featherston District High School, was successful in gaining first place in the ladies’ 100 yards handicajj event at the evening athletic sports meeting held at Carterton on Wednesday. School Swimming Carnival.

Good weather and excellent management contributed to making the swimming carnival, held at the South Featherston School baths on Friday afternoon, an outstanding success. All the events were keenly contested. A number of trophies for competition had been donated by South Featherston residents. An event especially enjoyed by the spectators, was a diving exhibition by Master J. Foss, aged 6 years. The following are the results of the various events: — Forty-four yards girls ’ chnpionship: T. Other trophies were presented by Misses Hodder and Messrs Yule and Brash. Tho proceeds of the carnival will be used to assist in providing the baths with much needed dressing accommodation. Bowling. In a match for the bowling club championship played on the local green on Friday afternoon. Ball and Rea lost to Sinclair and Rolls, 18-17. The latter will represent Featherston in tho match for the Wairarapa championship to be played at Featherston to-day. The party of New South Wales bowlers who are touring New Zealand payed a short visit to tho local greens on Thursday and were entertained by the members of the Featherston Club.
