LIBEL ACTION FAILS.
AGAINST AUCLAND PAPER. VERDICT FOR DBFENDANT. HAMILTON, March 3. An interesting libel action was decided in the Supremo Court to-day before Mr. Justice Stringer and a jury of twelve. The plaintiff was John Henry Hannan, Auckland, and the defendant William Blomfield, printer and publisher, proprietor of the “New Zealand Observer.” The claim was for £3OO damages for an alleged libel contained in an article stating that Hannan was unfit to hold a Justice of the Peace commission in view of his re'corded convictions and other conduct. Hannan did not give evidence. The jury found that there was no libel. The verdict was for defendant with costs and disbursements against Hannan.—(P.A.).
