CHECKING TUBERCULOSIS.

SCHEME OF CONTROL. A NATIONAL UNDERTAKING. CHRISTCHURCH, March 3. The report* of the special conference which discussed the treatment of tuberculosis on a national basis, was received at the hospitals boards’ conference this morning. The report carried with it the following recommendation: “That the question of the treatment of tuberculosis in New Zealand be referred to the executive of the association to take what evidence it considers necessary and submit a recommendation to a further conference.”

Dr. Blackmore’s suggestions and recommendations were as follows: “The hospital boards of the North Island and those of the South Island to combine in respective groups for the purpose of carrying out measures for dealing with tuberculosis, each of the two combinations of boards to have an executive committee representative of all the boards in the combination; to avoid unwieldirfess the smaller boards to join groups of two or three to appoint a single representative on the committee. The functions of each of the North and -South Island committees would be to take over or establish and maintain tuberculosis dispensaries in the various centres, and the visiting medical and nursing personnel in connection therewith; fresh air homes for the children of tubercular parents; sanatoria for early eases; special hospitals for advanced cases; working colonies for cases requiring medical supervision while their working capability is being restored; generally to control and direct measures for the prevention and treatment of tuberculosis in the respective islands. It is considered the Government’s function to deal with tuberculosis cases of bad habits or character. It is also deemed the Government’s function to establish and maintain a research institution.” The report was adopted.—(P.A.)
