SOUTH WAIRARAPA ITEMS.
(“The Age” Special.)
The Carterton Amateur Athletic Club’s electric light sports meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 9, at 8 p.m. There will be 18 events, and the competitors will include R. A. Bose, the Dominion long distance champion, besides Wellington runners.
Druids’ Lodge. At the quarterly summoned meeting of Totara Lodge, U.A.0.D., on Monday evening, the delegates to the Grand Lodge meeting at Palmerston North was given a free hand in matters to bo considered. Six benefit members were initiated into the Order, making eight admissions for the quarter. The annual ball was fixed for May 23.
Bowling. At a meeting of the Carterton Bowling Club, it was decided to arrange a visit to the Thorndon and Victoria Clubs on Saturday, March 19. Messrs. A. C. Feast, F. Tyler and H. Burgess were appointed to make arrangements for top-dressing the green. A return game is to be arranged with Grey town for Saturday next. It was resolved t® make arrangements for a shop day. FEATHERSTON. (“The Age” Special.) Mrs. IL Watson is at present an inmate of Dr. Price's hospital. Mr. Nichollson, of the local Post Office staff, has resumed his duties after a holiday spent in Auckland. Mr. A. Tocker is at present an inmate of the Hobson Street private hospital. Wellington, undergoing treatment to his arm, which he injured some time ago while trucking sheep at the local railway station. A satisfactory solution of the water shortage difficulty at South Featherston, which has been a matter of concern to the committee for some time, has at last been arranged, an electric pump having been installed by the Education Board.
Croquet. A number of the members of the Featherston Croquet Club were tho guests of the Ngaroma Club on Monday, when a match was played for the Pollock Stars, Mesdames Tregoar and Warner (Ngaroma) defeating the challengers, Mrs. Wickens and Mr. Saunders (Featherston), 26/11. A number of friendly games were also played, the results being as follow; Mesdames Hunter and McPherson lost to Mesdames Fairbrother and Combs; Mesdames Sykes and Laurie lost to Mesdames Vincent and O’Brien; Mesdames Cotton and Bennett lost to Mesdames McKenzie and Warren. At Island Bay, Mesdames Rowles and Williams (challengers) of the Featherston Club, lost to Mesdames Rogers and Cully (Island Bay) in a match for the McKenzie Wristlets. The Featherston School branch of the Dr. Barnardo’s Homes League held a box-opening on Tuesday. The total amount collected was £7 9s 6|d. The Prejffiytorian Sunday School's annual picnic was held on Saturday on the property of Mr. E. O’Neale, Underhill Road.
The Kaiwaiwai School picnic was held at Tauherenikau racecourse on Friday. A most enjoyable day was spent by the children. In the evening a dance, which was very well attended, was held in the Kaiwaiwai Hall.
A large number of South Wairarapa residents attended the Oddfellows’ annual picnic, hold at Wharepapa on Sunday. The day, which was otherwise most enjoyable, was somewhat marred by the weather.
Plunket Society. The monthly meeting of the Featherston branch of tho Plunket Society was held on Tuesday, Mrs. Q. Donald being in the chair. Thos present were: Mesdames R. Barton, G. Yule, W. Barton, M. Elgar, D. Collins, C. Pearce, G. Nelson, D. H. S. Riddiford, J. G. McKenzie, E. M. Wakely, and Meßae. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames Bloxam, Lawson and Ball. The nurse's report for the month of February was read and was considered most satisfactory. The report was as follows: Number of new cases, 7: visits to homes, 76; visits to office, 58; advice by telephone, 45; emulsion sold. 2lb. The usual monthly visits to K< hautara and Pihautea had .been paid Accounts totalling £lO 4s 6d were passed for payment. It was decided to huj-t bridge parties every fortnight front Friday, March 4, the proceeds to go to the local funds.
