A message from Vienna reports that hundreds of people arc dead as a result of an earthquake which centred in Stolac in Jugoslavia. A landslide overwhelmed twelve houses in Serajero, while numbers of railway stations and hotels were destroyed between Spalato and Mostar. Minor shocks are reported in Central and Southern Italy.
The Portuguese Government, a Lisbon cablegram reports, has issued a decree that revolutionaries are to be tried without a jury, but sentences will be subject to confirmation by a Court of Appeal. Moreover, instigators will be made responsible for damage caused by bombardments. The Republican Guard will be disbanded and all political clubs and associations concerned in the revolt dissolved.
An epidemic of suicides among young students at the universities and high schools during the past eight weeks has shocked the nation, a New York message states. A series of tragedies came to a head on Sunday, when a .young college man shot 'himself, leaving a despondent note, and on Monday, when three high school students committed self-murder, making a total of eleven in two months. Several of these were members of prominent families and living in comfortable circumstances. One leift a message saying he was going on a glorious adventure. Another said he believed life would become a burden. A third wrote that he feared he would lose his mind. A fourth destroyed himself alter amateur theatricals in the school auditorium, where he had been received with great applause. A most affecting case was that of a son of the noted American poet, Lois Untermeyer. The youngster killed himself shortly after being visited by his father.
