PROTECTION OF BIRDS.

AT MOUNT HOLDSWORTH. PENALTIES FOR OFFENCES. With reference to the protection of bi ids, especially native pigeons, in tho forest reserve at Mount Holdsworth, the secretary of tho Alount Holdsworth Club has received the following information from the State Forest Service. Under the Forests Act, section 47 reads: 41 Every person commits an offence against this Act and shall bo liable on summary conviction to a fine of £2O, who in any State Forest, except pursuant to a license, lease or permit under this Act or other lawful authority.... (a) Hunts, shoots, or destroys or sets snares for the purpose of capturing any animals or birds. The native pigeon is absolutely protected under tho Animals Protection Act, and section 40 (1) of this Act reads; “Every person commits an offence who without lawful authority (the proof whereof shall be on the party charged...... (b) ‘Takes or kills any absolutely protected animal, or any imported game or native game. (2) Every person v, ho offends against any provisions of this section is liable to a line of £25 for every such offence.”
