THE SHOW
ALL READY FOR THE OPENING. NOTABLE EXHIBITS. ACCOMMODATION WELL FILLED. During the week-end, working parties have been busily engaged at Solway putting the finishing touches to preparations for the Show. All preliminaries are now well in hand. The ticketing of the pens has been completed. Some stock exhibits have already arrived from Wanganui and elsewhere, and the bulk of the stock animals will be pouring in from this morning until late at night. Splendidly as the Solway grounds are equipped and appointed, the accommodation is not more than sufficient to house the bumper
entries received this year. Beautiful at any time, the Solway showground is at present at the top of its condition. The bush and paddocks are in splendid order, and there is a lovely display of flowers in the numerous beds. In fact, .the grounds themselves are well worth visiting, apart from the manifold attractions of the Show. It is, of course, one of the great attractions of the Masterton Show that visitors are able to picnic in beautiful surroundings and in conditions that are ideal in every way. It was found yesterday that a number of the sideshow people had located themselves in the bush at Solway. In view of the experience of last year, it had been decided not to allow the bush to be occupied again in this way. The sideshow proprietors were interviewed by the president of the A. and P. Association (Mr. G. H. Perry) and instructed to move to another location selected for them by the committee. The removal was duly effected.
Until recently, the pig had taken rather a back seat in this country, but the “gintieman that pays the Tint” is now commanding a great deal of attention from practical and progressive farmers. Entries in the pig classes at the Masterton Show.are still far from being as numerous as those in other stock classes, but they are likely to be viewed, with a great" deal of interest. Particularly fine animals are to be exhibited by Mr. Allen Donald, Mr. L. B, Wilton and other exhibitors. Some of the pigs placed on exhibition are of such magnitude that the ordinaiy pig pens were much too small to accommodate them and had to be enlarged. A number of visitors from Wellington are to be entertained at luncheon at Solway to-morrow by the A. and P. president (Mr. G. H. Perry) and his colleagues. It is hoped that the visitors will include the'Mayor of Wellington (Mr. C. J. B. Norwood) and several members of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce. The Mayor of Masterton (Mr. T. Jordan) has also been invited.
The Show catalogue will be on sale to-day.
