SANDERS CUP.

CANTERBURY WINS FIRST RACE. CHRISTCHURCH, February 12. In the first race for the Sanders Cup, sailed this afternoon in a north-west breeze-, the Betty (Canterbury), holder of the trophy, won easily. She finished three minutes ahead of the Auckland boat Bona, which finished second. The Bona, however, was disqualified for having touched the Mirihiku (Southland). when rounding the weather buoy for the second time. The finishing times were: Betty (Canterbury), 4 hours 29 minutes 15 seconds; Bona (Auckland), 4 hours 32 minutes, 22 seconds; Murihiku (Southland), 4 hours 33 minutes 5 seconds; Avalon (Hawke’s Bay), 4 hours 33 minutes 50 seconds; Winifred (Otago), 4 hours 35 minutes 23 second; Peggy (Wellington), 4 hours 37 minutes 35 seconds. The race was sailed in- a light to moderate breeze. Conditions were ideal for sailing. The Betty was early among the leaders and turned the first mark 40 seconds ahead of the Bona. Thereafter, the defender gradually increased the lead and went on to win as stated. -(P.A.). CHRISTCHURCH, February 12. The race for the Cornwell Cup, sailed at Lyttelton on Saturday, was won by the Gadfly (Stewart Island) which crossed the line one and a half minutes in front of the Winsome (Lyttelton).— (P.A.)
