IMMIGRATION OPPOSED.
A.S.R.S. RESOLUTION. WELLINGTON, February 11. Criticism of the immigration policy of the Government was voiced at a continuation to-day of the national conference of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants. During the discussion the point was stressed by delegates that far from being antagonistic to the immigrant, they had a good deal of sympathy with the unfortunate workers who came out to New Zealand, having been misled by reports suggesting that they were sure of a position. The necessity for publishing information in England regarding conditions in New Zealand was also urged hy several delegates, and it was mentioned that on the day of Jlr. Coates’s arrival in London, the New Zealand Labour Party cabled the “Daily Herald’"’ as follows: “Unemployment in New Zealand more severe than for many years. Much distress in cities. Government failed to meet situation, its immigration policy accentuafing the difficulty. ’ ’ The following resolution was adopted unanimously: “That this conference of the A.S.R.S. protests against the Government’s immigration policy being continued. In view of the unemployment in the country, we feel that the workers are entitled to the same measure of protection as that afforded by the Government to another section of the community recently when a protest was made against their market being flooded by dumping.”—(P.A.)
