MOTORIST IN TROUBLE.
SERIOUS CHARGES IN DUNEDIN. DEFENDANT FAINTS IN COURT.. DUNEDIN, February 7. In the City Police Court to-day, Mr. H. W. Bundle, S.M., gave his reserved decision in the ease of Walter Philip Hailes, who was charged with having ob. New Year’s morning, about one o’clock, failed to stop when an accident occurred to Robert Anderson, with having failed to report the accident to the police, and also with dangerous driving. His Worship said he was satisfied that it was defendant’s car that caused the accident, and he was satisfied that defendant could not have struck a pedestrian without knowing it. Defendant would be convicted.
At this stage defendant fainted and had to be carried out of Court.
Mr. Hanlon, representing defendant, said that defendant was liable to be further charged under the Crimes Act, and he asked the Magistrate to refrain from entering a conviction for a week to enable defendant to decide if he would appeal. The Magistrate agreed, and prohibited Hailes from driving a car meanwhile.—(P.A.)
