JANUARY’S WEATHER.

A HEAT WAVE. RAINFALL BELOW THE AVERAGE. WELLINGTON, February 7. The following nummary of the weather for January has been supplied by the Director of the Meteorological Department:— The oustanding feature of January’s* weather was a heat wave that obtained in the latter half of the month. This long dry spell caused most parts of the Dominion *to show rainfall totalswell below the average for the month. The exceptions were principally owing to minor disturbances, chiefly affecting certain localities. For instance, in the first week of January there were thunderstorms ip parts on the 2nd and 6th, accompanied by heavy downpours and in the same eriod a pcyclonic disturbance passed ©ff the East Cape, bringing highly beneficial rainfall to the East Coast of the North Island. Widespread disturbances ruled ’between the 10th and 16th., but it was of small intensity and accounted for more general rainfalls, especially in the West Coast and southern districts of the South Island. The early part of the month was good for crops and growth of grass, but the warm and dry period in the latter half affected pasturage, particularly on light land.*-(P.A.)’. ’
